As you probably know, the Internets World Wide Web is beginning to change the way the people communicate and, it now appears that this new medium will significantly change the way we do business in the years ahead! Right now you can shop on the Internet for almost any commodity and recent developments in data transmission security have made it possible to do financial transactions, and even your banking, "online"! From January of 1995 to January of 2000 the number of people connected to the Internet has grown by 400%! However, in just the last 24 months Internet commerce has increased by more than 5,000%!
In our view, one of the most important considerations in developing a Web site is this phenomenal Internet growth factor. Everyday, tens of thousands of new people go online in begin to advertise their business or organization or, more simply, just communicate with friends and relatives through their Home Page. At the same time, technology is advancing an exponential rate, offering the same new citizens of the Internet increasingly advanced methods of communication, now including interactive video and CD-quality audio capabilities. Initially, the result was significant Internet congestion caused by too many people using new technologies that were never contemplated by the designers of our telephone system. The recent introduction of satellite, cable and other forms of high-speed Internet transmission, has helped to reduce this traffic jam, but many problems still exist.

We'll try to address each of these important issues in the sections of
this page. Remember, the Internet is a fluid and quickly changing advertising
medium! What worked only a few months ago may no longer be the most effective way to
communicate your business image or your products and services.
One of the more important places to begin is the selection of a Domain Name. While you are not required to secure your own Domain Name, this easily identifiable World Wide Web address is a key to helping people find your Web site. The usual format for your Domain Name will be "www.yourdomainname.com". The "com" in the designation is often used to designate commercial businesses. If you are a school, your Domain Name should end in "edu". If, on the other hand, you represent an organization, your Domain Name may end in "org".
Prior to 1999, in the United States, all Domain Names for the World Wide Web were designated and sold on a first-come first-served basis by Network Solutions, Inc. located near Washington D.C.. Businesses, organizations, educational institutions or private parties were able to secure a new Domain Name from the InterNIC division of Network Solutions at a cost of $35 per year, with a $70 initial payment required for the first two years. Unfortunately, Network Solutions was frequently been unable to keep up with the demand for their services and, therefore, developed a reputation for often failing to meet the needs of their customers. In order to address this situation, the U.S. Department of Commerce established a Domain Name Registrar accreditation system that now allows other companies to compete with Network Solutions. Registering your Domain name with Network Solutions is still a good choice, but other companies are now available and providing competitive pricing.
Once you have selected a Domain Name, and this name has been approved by your domain name registrar, the name will become your new Web site address. As long as you continue to pay the small annual fee for use of this name, it will be unique to your business. Other businesses throughout the world may use similar wording for their Domain Name, and some, using the Domain Name registration services of other countries, may be able to secure names which are very close to yours. However, none will be exactly the same! Once you have secured your Web site address, this address should be used on all of your company publications. The address will also become the basis of your email address, i.e. "email@example.com".
Perhaps the most important thing to remember is that once a Domain Name is assigned to a particular business or organization, that name cannot be used by anyone else. As the Internet becomes more congested everyday with tens of thousands of new businesses, there is an obvious urgency to secure the name that will identify your business Web address before it has been assigned to another company. It is our recommendation that, even if you are not planning a Web site right now, you consider securing your Domain Name now before it is too late.

our world might well be transacted over the Internet, this is not the case today. Indeed, it

Consideration should be given, by any business contemplating a commercial Web site, to
their "virtual store's" objectives, expected financial returns and the current
demographics of prospective Internet customers.
A couple of years ago, those who were connected to
the World Wide Web tended to be middle and upper middle-class, "white-collar" and
computer literate. User occupations that were commonly represented tended to be management
professionals, computer-related career employees and those who were educators or connected
with educational institutions. There also were a predominance of men connected to
the Internet. However, these factors have rapidly changed and businesses that provide services
or products primarily to a blue-collar customer base should now be
encouraged to develop a longer range, more aggressive, plan for their Web
presence. For businesses that have a worldwide corporate presence, already have
catalog sales operations, or offer hotel or
restaurant services to out-of-state or foreign clients, interactive advertising on the
World Wide Web will provide immediate lucrative opportunities.
The cost of Web site design always reflects the size and complexity of the Web site. Very simply the cost is usually a function of the design and site maintenance time. Typically, for CCS clients, design intensive multi-page Web sites, with significant graphic design and many photographs, can cost as much as $5,000 or more. On the other hand, a one or two-page Web site that is "piggybacked" on the CCS host server could provide a small business with a professional, customized Web presence for approximately $300! As you can see, there is great latitude in the cost of developing your Web site!
Another important concept to keep in mind is that, in our opinion, many Web sites today are "over designed", making extensive use of large photographs, animated Java graphics, music and even video. While these components are fascinating to view and hear once they are downloaded from the Web, they also can be extremely memory intensive and require so long to appear on the screen that potential customers often leave in frustration to find a faster site! Few would argue that these new technologies are not exciting and, someday, they will be worth their cost. However, today, many prospective customers are still limited by accessing the Internet through regular telephone lines with slow modems and slower computers! With this in mind, it is usually a recommendation to our clients that their new Web pages make good use of colorful graphic design and load quickly! We believe that this will help to bring in new customers by rapidly disseminating information that visitors want and at the same time help to reduce the production costs of their Web site.
As we suggested earlier, in our opinion, securing a Domain Name immediately is important. However, you'll also want to consider that, while a small Web site can be established in a matter of days, it will require many months for perspective customers to become aware of your new Web address. Finding Your Web Site on the Internet...
As you probably know by now, the Internet is extremely crowded. Though difficult to count, many suggest that by the World Wide Web is already a community of over 500 million businesses, organizations and people all within the range of a simple click of your computer mouse! For years now, it has not been enough to simply develop an eye-catching, fast-loading Web site. At the same time you are building your "virtual branch location" on the Internet, it will be vitally important to also develop a strategy for helping prospective customers find your new location. Essentially, this concept is the same as carefully choosing a busy intersection for the location of a new branch store. Obviously, no one with good business sense, would build a beautiful new store on a poorly traveled back street just because land was cheaper there. Yet, many new businesses today make this very mistake in developing a new commercial Web site.
Consider the following four basic concepts for marketing the address of your new Web site to prospective customers:
Business Publication Advertising
Listing the your new Web site and email addresses on your business cards, stationery, newsletters, advertisements and other business correspondence and publications is essential!
Link and Banner Exchange
It will be important to agree with business associates and other companies in your field, or related fields, to place a link to their Web site on your site, if they will reciprocate and make it possible for their Web visitors to also quickly go to your Web site from a link on theirs.
You will also find that some companies, with high traffic Web sites, will sell your company banner advertising space on their Web pages. Placing a colorful banner, with your logo, on a frequently visited Web site is an excellent way to draw people to your new location. Visitors will simply click on the banner and be instantly transported to your site! Search Engine Submissions
Search engines are the "Yellow Pages" of the World Wide Web. There are hundreds of these search engine Web sites now on the Internet that allow prospective customers and Web "surfers" to simply type in a word or phrase and immediately secure a list of hundreds, or thousands, of Web locations that contain information on the topic they have requested.
Currently, the top 10 Search Engines -- including Yahoo, Google, and Hot Bot -- handle approximately 80% of World Wide Web searches. While each of the Search Engine services uses Web Bots (computer indexing robots) to roam the Internet looking for new sites, it is important to submit your new Web site to each Search Engine. CCS will advise you regarding the addition of keyword Meta Tags to each of the pages on your Web site that will assist the Web Bots in effectively indexing your site. We will also suggest that you consider resubmitting your site on a quarterly or monthly basis to keep your indexing data fresh on each Search Engine. The cost involved in this submission process can be less than $150 per year and provide a substantial increase in "hits" to your web site!
Search Engine Positioning
Five or six years ago, frequent search engine submissions were sufficient to assure that prospective customers and visitors could easily find your Web site location. Unfortunately, the Internet is now growing so fast that it is estimated that search engines are currently indexing only about 30% of the World Wide Web. In addition, every time a search is performed by someone looking for services your company offers, the addresses of literally thousands of companies around the world, that are similar to yours, will be made available in the search "hit" list. No prospective customer, of course, will ever explore thousands, or even hundreds, of Web sites. The companies that are assured of new business, are those that are listed in the top 10 or 20 "hits" on the search list. As you can probably guess, sophisticated programming techniques have been, and continue to be, developed to secure a company's position at the beginning of any keyword search results list.
